Staff Picks for Idaho Wine Month
Idaho is one of the fastest-growing wine regions in the United States with over 60 wineries and more than 1,300 acres of vineyards. Our tradition for celebrating Idaho Wine Month is a long-standing one, dating back eleven years ago when June was dedicated to celebrating local wineries and winemakers. While we may celebrate differently this year, Idaho Wine and Cider Month is still going strong with a HUGE sale of 15% off all Idaho wines and ciders here at the Boise Co-op. Read below for our top picks from the entire Wine Shop staff!
Karlee: Par Terre
I’ve become a big fan of Par Terre and applaud them for pushing the envelope of what’s “normal” in the Idaho wine scene. This 2016 Merlot has well-balanced acidity, some mellow oak showing through, and would be a perfect pairing for summer bbq!
Bob: Koenig Vineyards Snake River Cabernet
Winemaker Greg Koenig is the wine guy with the best chops in our little corner of Oenology. He's been making wine nearly longer than anybody here else. As such he has made this Cabernet Sauvignon big and gutsy but with feminine softness and spice. A very well balanced and smooth quaff or dinner mate.
Marcy: Split Rail Daft Pink
I love bubbles and this natural, unfiltered sparkling wine doesn't disappoint. Pink grapefruit and peach with vibrant acidity make for a refreshing summer wine.
Kent: 2017 Clearwater Canyon Lochsa Chardonnay
An excellent Idaho Chardonnay. The citrus is supported by bright acidity. A steal at $12.99.
Bruce: 2019 Free Dog Wines Albarino
This variety produces some of Spain's best whites, but this is only the second wine from this grape we've seen in Idaho. We hope it becomes a trend. Fresh, floral, and mouth-wateringly delicious.
Reggie: 2018 Koenig Vineyards Viognier
2018 Koenig Viognier is very true to type. In addition to the pretty floral bouquet, flavors of pear and baked apple mingle with a generous portion of minerality.
Stephen: Hat Ranch 2016 Tempranillo
Hat Ranch 2016 Tempranillo begins with dark-chocolate covered cherries. The mouthfeel is richer than its Spanish ancestor's, and there are smoke and leather in the finish. A truly unforgettable experience!
