Thanks for your interest in joining the Board! We are always interested in meeting qualified candidates. The deadline to apply for this year’s election is Friday, July 12th, 2024. Applications received after this date will be saved for the following year’s election. Please read through the information on this page to ensure you meet the requirements.

How to Become a Candidate

Board Member Expectations

  • Understand and promote the mission of the Boise Co-op

  • Understand and abide by the Bylaws of the Boise Co-op

  • Understand the role of the Board of Directors

  • Act in the interests of all of the owners, not a specific constituency

  • Attend meetings faithfully and serve on committees effectively (10-20 hours/month time commitment, depending on committee assignments and intensity of board work which may vary over time)

  • Assess their own performance as Board Directors

  • Assure continuity of the highest quality in Board Directorship

Application Requirements

Applicants must be Members of the Boise Co-op in good standing for at least 6 months prior to the election, without an overriding conflict of interest with the Boise Co-op (See Bylaws, Section 4.6 available here).  

Once elected, Directors must sign a Statement of Agreement and publicly disclose any potential conflicts of interest that may arise. A conflict of interest is a personal interest that might impair or reasonably appear to impair a Director’s independent, unbiased judgment in the discharge of his or her responsibilities to the Co-op.


Criteria Considered by Nominations Committee

  • Active owner of record in good standing (may be verified with Customer Service)

  • Application submitted prior to deadline (July 12, 2023)

  • Ability to perform the responsibilities and expectations of a director

  • Good communication skills

  • Willingness to abide by the Code of Ethics and Conduct (see below)

  • Leadership qualities (listed below)

  • Understanding of the role of the Board of Directors

  • Ability to readily understand financial issues and read financial statements such as balance sheets

  • Previous experience on a board, committee, or other group


Leadership Qualities Considered

The Board of Directors needs people with a commitment to the entire ownership of the Co-op, not just specific issues. If you possess the following leadership characteristics, or a good number of them, please consider applying.

  • Able to share a vision, a purpose, an ideal

  • Empowers others and delegates authority

  • Is creative, imaginative, and flexible

  • Respects multiple elements of diversity and diversity of thought

  • Displays candor and has the courage to challenge respectfully

  • Follows through on commitments

  • Understands balance between the bottom line and larger organizational purpose

  • Able to maintain confidentiality when required

  • Able to work on a team

  • Able to put the interests of the whole body above the interests of a few

  • Able to think long term and see the big picture without getting bogged down in details

How to Run for the Board

The deadline to apply for the 2024 election is Friday, July 12, 2024

Please fill out the application form at the bottom of this page to be considered for a nomination.

NOTE: Members may also nominate themselves for a seat on the Board by submitting a petition signed by one hundred and twenty five (125) members and submitted to the Boise Co-op at least seventy-five days before the date of the annual meeting (see Bylaws, Section 4.3). Petitions must be submitted by the close of business on July 12, 2024 to be eligible. Petitioners must use the Boise Co-op Board of Directors Petition Form found here.  While nomination by petition is acceptable, the Nominations and Election Committee strongly encourages interested members to fulfill the endorsement requirements, as this is the best way to ensure potential Board Directors fully understand the work and responsibilities of the Board.

Election Process: The Boise Co-op will promote the upcoming election and educate members about the candidates’ qualifications (for example, through Candidates Statements published in the Boise Co-op website). The voting period begins Thursday, August 15 at 7:00 am, and ends Wednesday, September 18 at 11:59 pm. Once the ballots are counted, the four candidates receiving the highest number of votes shall be given the available Board seats. Terms of Directors shall begin at the first meeting of the Board after the annual meeting in accordance with the Bylaws, Section 4.3. Terms for Directors may range from one to three years as needed to ensure no more than three terms are scheduled to expire every year.
