Wine All The Time

Don't forget out wine class next Monday, January 28. Bob will be featuring wines that don't break the bank but drink like they are in a much higher price point. You will love trying these hidden gems that Bob has put together!


Every once in a while, someone will come in and ask for wines from Slovenia. Well, we have them, Vina Stekar, organic and delicious wines from the Goriska BRDA region of Slovenia.

2015 Merlot, $23.00

The fresh quality of fruit, with ample acidity, and lovely supple tannins, make for a remarkable Merlot to drink around the dinner table with many different cuisines. Red cherries, plums, and spices come through on the nose and on the palate, bringing an overall balance to this age worthy red that is truly spectacular.

2015 Cabernet Franc, $22.00

This Cabernet Franc is not as typical ‘lean and green’ as some of the French examples, as the fruit and earthiness are a bit rounder and fuller. However, the character of the grape really shines through with an herbal and savory quality that is laced around dark berried fruit, plum, and soft wood spices, and finishes very long and pleasant.

2016 Sivi Pinot (Pinot Gris), $20.00

Intense on the palate with dried and ripe fruits, spicy tones, and an undertone of fresh minerality, this wine has gorgeous depth, slight grip, and well-rounded acidity.

2017 Malvazija (Malvasia), $21.00

This wine is intense on the nose, with beautiful fruit tones, robust herbal quality, and even hints of acacia flower. It is fresh and vibrant while still being very full-bodied, harmonious in alcohol and acidity, and overall very balanced.


Walking the wine shop, we sometimes find great wines that we forgot we had. Here is a sleeper that everyone who loves good Chardonnay should try.

2013 Blue farm Gap’s Crown Chardonnay, $52.00

Very Burgundian in style, this light-bodied wine sings in bright, citrus-laden overtones, with enough length and complexity to intrigue. Rocky minerality overlays lemon pith and a delightful crispness that makes for a food friendly, celebratory selection. 92 Pts Wine Enthusiast

Exciting Down Under Wines

We brought in some great white wines form Australia and New Zealand, you'll want to stop by and pick up a few:

2016 Sherwood Estate Pinot Gris, New Zealand, $13.99

Medium gold in color, this is a rich, ripe and fleshy version of Pinot Gris. Heady aromas of tropical fruits, bruised apples and pears along with flower blossoms are followed by a creamy, weighty palate that squeaks in just enough acidity to keep things from getting overly heavy.

2015 Wildberry Two Passions Chardonnay, Australia, $16.99

Lively, mineral-accented Meyer lemon, pear and nectarine aromas slowly take on a floral nuance. Sappy and focused on the palate, offering lively citrus and pit fruit flavors that deepen on the back half. In a lively style, finishing with very good energy and mineral cut. 90 Pts, Vinous

2016 Nugan King Valley Chardonnay, Australia, $18.99

Pale straw in appearance, with a youthful green hue. Aromas of peach, nectarine, poached peach and mixed spice overtones. A rich mouth-filling palate of stone fruit, biscuit and yeast notes with a crisp acidity that complements the generously full fruit flavors.

Mondavi 2015 Divining Rod Red, $9.99

The Divine Red -- with its deep, rich, red color -- opens with aromas of blackberry, cedar, and cinnamon. The blackberry and black pepper flavors are complemented by hints of plum and cassis, giving the wine zip and a kick. New French oak adds a pleasant mouthfeel, texture and weight giving the right amount of influence to envelop the wine in a fitting tannic structure and a long finish that preserves the integrity and brightness of the Lodi fruit.

McManis 2016 Petite Verdot, $9.99

Aromatically, the wine is full of blackberry, with some blueberry. Additional notes of mocha and a faint smokiness are contributed from oak aging. The wine is dense and full of dark berry fruit flavors with a creamy, supple mouth feel. Flavors of fresh berries and mocha linger in the finish.

New Idaho Wines

We love supporting the Idaho Wine Industry and we just picked up some new wines from a winery up north that has been a pioneer in Idaho winemaking.

Clearwater Canyon has just released some new wines and we ordered them in as soon as they were available. We’ve got:

2016 Coco’s Reserve Red Blend: Malbec, Petite Sirah, Carmenere, Cabernet franc, Petite Verdot, and Merlot

Layer upon layer of ripe fruits and warm spices excite your senses. Plum compote, cumin, strawberry jam, and white pepper take turns as the leading role. Dark crimson and round tannins indicate this wine will age well. Dear Carmenère lovers, this is a wine for you!

2016 Mary Bonita Red Blend: Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Cabernet

Mary Bonita is Coco's Grandmother. Rich aromas and flavors of dried raspberries, vanilla bean, and dark-silt-loam soils soothe the soul. Levity is imparted with a blast of the classic mineral, specifically wet stone, characteristic of the Lewis-Clark Valley. Mouthwatering acidity and rounded tannins finish the beautiful experience of a wine worthy of Mary Bonita.

2016 Louis Del Sol Cabernet: Cabernet, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah

Pecan pie, pomegranate, currants, juniper berries, roasted marshmallows and cobble stones lead you into the glass and seemly soak into your palate. Velvety tannins and intense color make this an age worthy wine that can be enjoyed for its boldness now or can be your muse for years to come.

2016 The Wine Project: Petite Verdot, Petite Sirah, Merlot, and Malbec

The inky pigment and full-bodied tannins of this wine are matched with bold flavors of sandalwood, cinnamon, black cherries, and purple violets that lead into a long finish of roasted marshmallows, hazelnuts, and charcoal.


We also picked up some reserve wines from Ste. Chapelle; usually only available at the winery, but we were able to bring some in for the Wine Shop.

2016 Open Air Red Blend: Cabernet, Syrah, Grenache, Malbec, and Tempranillo

Aromas and flavors of dark fruit and cocoa, finishing with vibrant fruit and smooth tannins.

NV Sparkling Wild Huckleberry: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

This wild sparkler boasts vibrant huckleberries married with the crisp sweetness of apricot and nectarine.

Halloween Time

It’s almost Halloween, time for ghosts, goblins and skulls. That’s right—skulls. Crack open your Halloween brew with the Wall Mount Skull Bottle Opener ($9.99), and then pour it into the Kikkerland Skull Stein ($14.99).

Eight Years a Prisoner

In 1998 David Phinney started Orin Swift Cellars when he released his first wine, the Zinfandel based The Prisoner. A cult following ensued, and in 2010, he sold that brand to Huneeus Vinters. He stayed on for a short time, but when they parted ways, while he kept the Orin Swift name, he signed a non-compete that barred him from producing a Zin based wine for eight long years. That has now expired, and Phinney has just released the appropriately named Eight Years in the Desert. Very limited production, but we managed to score a few. Priced at $45 a bottle, it will not last long.


Great Summer Wines

Hot weather is finally upon us and it's time to explore new areas in the wine shop that you may have overlooked, like miscellaneous white wines from California and Washington. These often get overlooked and it's a shame because we have some really good ones. Here are a few of our favorites:


Klinker Brick 2017 Albarino, $14.99
Aromas of stone fruit, pear, and honeydew melon lead into full, elegant flavors of green apple and peach, laced with a subtle minerality.
 

Maryhill 2016 Viognier, $12.99
Aromas of pear, honeysuckle and cantaloupe melon transition into a palate that is juicy and round in the mouth with notes of Meyer lemon, pear and nectarine.
 

Ca Momi 2016 White Blend, $9.99
Savory, earthy accents complement ripe melon flavors and a generous texture in this pale-colored, medium-bodied wine. It has good heft on the palate, and is rich enough to keep the flavors lingering.
 

Locus 2016 2016 Modo White, $15.99
This easy-drinking Bordeaux-style white is refreshing any time of year. A Bordeaux style blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, you will find flavors of pineapple, lychee and citrus, with a touch of grass and flint.


The Perfect Summer Red:

2017 Fatalone Primitivo Teres, $18.99
Okay, Primitivo is Zinfandel’s first cousin, so how can it make a light summer red? This Italian entry uses grapes from the vine’s second budding (racemi). The extra stalk that’s typically pruned off, when left, produces a more delicate juice. That, and limited skin contact, result in a light ruby colored wine with enticing strawberry rhubarb aromas. Ripe strawberry and currant flavors are balanced by bright cranberry, with an edgy minerality. Give it a nice chill (about half an hour in the fridge), pour yourself a glass, and pair it with all your red wine favorites fresh off the grill.

Happy 4th of July!

Celebrate the 4th with the first of our month-long Rosé Wednesday wine tastings, at the North End Boise Co-op Wine Shop from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. This will be a special one, as it's your chance to get a first look at our soon-to-be-open Uncorked! Wine Bar. The tasting will be hosted there by Samantha (aka Sam) Bauer who will be heading up this new venture. Sam comes to us from Oakland's Bay Grape, one of the most innovative wine shop/wine bars in the Bay area, billing itself as a community gathering place. She brings that experience to Boise, along with her enthusiasm for, and knowledge of all things wine. For her first tasting, it's rosés from around the world. Here's what she'll be pouring:
