2013 Vilosell, $17.99

OK— cool label, excellent juice, great price! What more could a wine lover want? A short while back, I was invited to a tasting with one of our distributors, and I tried this wine. I immediately thought we should bring it in and stack it. So I bought a bottle, and invited my friend's Patrick and Cece over for a glass and their input. Needless to say, the Vilosell was well received. The wine is from the Catalonia region (also where Priorat is located) in northeastern Spain, and is a unique blend of 65 percent Tempranillo, 25 percent Syrah, and 10 percent Merlot that spent nine months in French oak before bottling. The nose shows ripe red fruit, spice, black olive, and plum. Our first taste again showed that ripe red fruit, blueberry, ripe raspberry, white pepper, and leather, all in a well-integrated oak frame. This wine has one foot planted firmly in the old world with its leather and spice notes, but has the other foot planted firmly in the new world with its rich fruit component. This is a great wine for the holidays, as it will go well with a variety of red meats and stews. I'll be leaving a glass of the Vilosell and some cookies out for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve!
